An Alternative to Typical Substance Abuse Counseling Programs I am providing creative and flexible outpatient addictive behavioral counseling (ABC)
and educational services based on a sensible and practical cognitive-behavioral approach. ABC services
are my professionally delivered, fee-for-service addictive behavior counseling methods
designed to assist clients in learning how to, “gain independence from addictive behavior.”
My menu
of services includes substance abuse assessments, initial consultations, individual counseling, group counseling, psycho-educational sessions, consultations or brief counseling for
and/or with significant others,
drug screening, recommendations or referrals to other appropriate service proiders. Generally, my ABC approach is abstinence oriented with a focus
on the SMART Recovery® “four
point program," but I am also open to working individually
with clients who are exploring whether or not abstinence is best for them.
In other words, I do not require a commitment to abstinence for
individiual counseling. However, a condition for participating in my group counseling sessions
is a commitment to the goal of maintaining abstinence while one is a member of the group. My ABC philosophy and techniques are evidence based,
flexible, and dynamic strategies characterized by integrating the following key components:
The SMART Recovery®
"4 Point Program":
- Maintaining Motivation for Change
- Preventing
Lapses and Relapses
Managing Life Problems
with Functional Coping Skills Developing
A More Satisfying Balanced Lifestyle
The Stages of Change Model
- Motivational
Interviewing (MI)
- Humanistic/Existential
Psychology and Philosophy
My
ABC services are individually based. I focus on working with clients in individual sessions and in an optional weekly
ABC group session of no more than 10 clients. Clients may also participate in the free SMART Recovery® meetings
available in the community and access the free SMART Online (SOL) support system “24/7.” While I do not
use the 12-Steps as a treatment modality, I am open to and supportive of clients who may want to attend 12-Step meetings as
well.All
services are offered by appointment. Individual sessions are offered on weekdays (in unique circumstances, some early evening or Saturday hours may be possible). Group counseling/educational sessions are offered on a weekday evening and may be offered during
the day if/when there is sufficient demand.

GETTING STARTED Typically, one would start the process by making an appointment for an assessment or
an initial consult. An assessment is indicated when a thorough clinical evaluation and recommendation is desired. A consult may be appropriate if a client has had a recent assessment at another agency and/or wants to discuss his/her situation
and concerns about how my services may be helpful. Most clients typically start with a 1.5 hour "Initial Consult"
which involves some elements of a clinical assessment but is less formal and more conversational.
